Marriages forming or ending, illnesses suspected or recovered from, moves in residence or job, children coming and going. Some of us can check nearly every category at once.   What does Judaism teach about stresses that seem to exceed our capacity to cope?   No matter how overwhelmed we may be by life’s affairs, and how hard it may be to imagine the normalcy of a calm, centered day, in fact, it’s not far off. In fact, our spiritual selves are as close as one hand to the other. All it takes to find our way back is the willingness to return. This is the teshuva, or “repentence” of the High Holy Days.   Take the time to pray and study this Season of Awe. When we let stresses be secondary, we put them in their true context. As it says many times in the Yamim Noraim liturgy, ours is not a punishing, unforgiving G-d. Rather, G-d is patient, compassionate and loving, and eager to welcome us back into the fold of our own truest selves any time, but especially when it is hardest to do.   According to the Bahir, the first Jewish mystical text, to aspire to be a tzadik, or righteous individual, we can meditate on the Hebrew letter tzadi, which looks like a person kneeling in prayer, arms upraised to the heavens. The book says is made up of a Nun (the L-shaped left line) and a Yod (the small squiggle on the right). Nun is the first letter in nevuah, prophecy. We become a prophet when we pray and are blessed to receive an answer, to experience G-d as active in our lives. Yod, the first letter in G-d’s name, represents G-d’s presence.   Thus, Tzadi tells us to always remember the firm connection, the reliable bridge between Nun – beseaching G-d for help, and Yod – receiving it. G-d is always present, available and waiting for our return. The High Holy Days are our annual reminder of this exact point. G-d’s light is as close to us as one arm is to the other. We just have to be willing to see.     ***   3 New Classes for Fall 2007   Survey the Jewish Yoga Universe Sample a variety of Jewish yoga techniques.
